Laura is a designer who sculpts wire and occasionally enjoys working with wood or stone when feeling the need for a contrast and more natural feel.
Working under the name Woods & Wire, Laura works from her home based studio in Bridge of Cally in Highland Perthshire.
Laura chooses to maintain a simplistic style, focusing on strong and unmistakable silhouettes and continues to draw inspiration from the Perthshire countryside where she has been based for the last 12 years. Whilst much of her work is based on the flora and fauna surrounding her studio, in contrast she also enjoys letting her imagination have a free reign, creating sculptures with a mythical and fantasy theme.
Laura’s design process begins with a variety of sketches and photos which she studies to get a feel for her subject and a better understanding of form. Sometimes just picking up her tools and starting the making process allows her creativity to flow and her imagination to take over. Laura’s wire sculptures grow from a combination using mainly galvanised netting, brass wire and enamelled copper, which means they can be equally enjoyed outside in the garden as indoors. Whenever the opportunity arises Laura works with used, scrap and offcuts of fencing as she cuts, twists and shapes various sizes and gauges of wire building up the layers to create her finished piece.
