Artisan Process
Nicola’s contemporary ceramic hanging planters are made in a traditional ceramics process called slip casting. The process requires Nicola to first produce her own plaster moulds from wooden originals which she turns on a lathe. Nicola pours liquid earthenware clay into the plaster moulds and allows the clay to set in the mould.
Once released from the mould, Nicola hand carves each planter’s unique design. For this range Nicola applies coloured slip to the pots as they are drying and scratches into the piece to reveal the white clay below to create the surface illustrations.
The planters are then fired in her kiln before a clear glaze is applied, they are then fired for a second and final time.
As each piece is handmade and illustrated freehand, no two pieces are ever exactly the same.
