Ceri McEwan

Ceri is a self-taught ceramicist with a passion for wheel-thrown pottery and making functional homewares. What began as a creative outlet during the 2020 lockdown quickly gathered momentum, leading her to trade in her architectural studies for a full-time career working with clay. Drawing inspiration from Scotland’s coastal landscapes, Ceri’s pieces are known for their vibrant glazes and include everything from mugs and vases to spoon rests and bowls in a range of sizes.

Working under the name Ceri M Creations, her studio on South Street in Perth also serves as a retail space and teaching hub.  Here, she offers intimate 1:1 and 1:2 pottery sessions, giving beginners plenty of hands-on guidance as they learn the art of throwing on a wheel.

Aesthetic

Ceri’s use of stoneware clay gives her work a natural, earthy character. She pairs this with bright, coastal-inspired glazes that reflect the varied shorelines of Scotland.

These glazes often break and pool in dynamic ways, highlighting surface textures and creating a unique, organic finish on each piece. Known for its strength and durability, stoneware offers the perfect balance of practicality and beauty in her functional designs.

Practice

Ceri exclusively hand-throws each piece on the potter’s wheel using a firm clay body that allows for precision and control. Once the forms are shaped and partially dried, they are carefully trimmed to achieve a surprisingly lightweight feel, with a strong focus on ergonomics and designed to sit comfortably in the hand without putting strain on the wrist. Each piece is glazed and then fired at high temperatures, typically between 1,200–1,300°C. This process vitrifies the stoneware, making it non-porous and watertight, even before glazing. The result is a collection of functional, everyday ceramics that are not only beautiful but also highly practical: all pieces are food, dishwasher, and microwave safe.
