Colin Bate & Hannah Blair

Colin and Hannah are the creative force behind Highwood Furniture. From their workshop in Alyth, they specialise in crafting unique, personal pieces of furniture and smaller wooden items, using locally sourced, sustainable Scottish timbers.

Colin trained at the renowned Chippendale International School of Furniture, where he graduated before becoming a member of the Fine Furniture Guild. In 2021, he was joined by Hannah, and together their shared skills and passion for working with wood drive them to continually explore new design ideas and techniques, crafting pieces they hope will be cherished as much as they enjoyed creating them.

Aesthetic

Their designs are inspired by a deep love for the outdoors, the beauty of nature, and the unique character of the materials they use. Their respect for our environment, community and working sustainably is firmly rooted in every aspect of their creative practice. They primarily work with Scottish hardwoods such as Oak, Ash, Sycamore, and the striking, although sadly diminishing Elm.

Equally comfortable working on a bespoke kitchen or a one-of-a-kind furniture piece, they’re also happy crafting smaller homewares and accessories, including chopping boards, coasters, cake stands, and candle holders.

Their collection also features personal items such as earrings, key rings, and a wide selection of their iconic Sgian Dubh’s, an essential finishing touch to traditional Highland dress.

Practice

When creating a commissioned piece, the process begins with understanding the client’s vision, inspirations, and functional needs. Colin and Hannah draw on their expertise to ensure they create a timeless piece of furniture. Each piece of wood, with its own unique character, helps shape the approach, ensuring the best possible outcome.

Working with exact precision is key when using both hand and power tools throughout every stage, whether cutting rough timber to size, or cutting and fitting joints. They also use the steamed wood bending method, a traditional and eco-friendly technique shaping wood into smooth, seamless and elegant curves, without cutting or gluing.  The wood is gently heated using steam softening the natural fibres and making it flexible. While still warm and pliable, it’s carefully bent into the desired shape using a custom mould. Once in place, it’s left to cool and dry, so it holds that shape permanently. This method is a blend of craftsmanship, science, and sustainability.
