Inga Jack
Textile artist Inga Jack works with a range of fabrics, combining her love of colour and pattern through hand block printing creating a unique sustainable collection of homewares and accessories. She is also a skilled kilt maker, crafting kilts from various tartans celebrating Scotland’s iconic national dress.
Having always been creative, Inga discovered her passion for relief textile printing through a series of workshops. After studying interior design as a mature student, she taught herself printmaking and launched Cushie Doo Textiles in 2019. Breagha Kilts is the name of her hand sewn bespoke traditional kilt making service.
Aesthetic
Inspired by the texture, pattern, and colour of the natural environment, Inga’s hand block printed textiles reflect the spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement. She feels a strong connection to its ethos of handcrafted quality, natural materials, and nature-inspired design. Hand block printing on textiles is one of the world’s oldest printing techniques and listed as an endangered UK craft by charity Heritage Crafts, something Inga is proud to help preserve.
Favouring vintage inspired paint palettes, Inga’s textile products complement modern and traditional homes.
Each piece is carefully handmade to last, using hand mixed sustainable inks to achieve nostalgic hues and warm, muted tones. Inga’s vision is to run a low-impact business with minimal waste and a strong commitment to sustainability.
Practice
Inga hand draws and transfers her designs onto lino, which she carefully carves using lino-cutting tools to highlight intricate details. She hand mixes non-toxic, eco-friendly inks in small batches, then rolls the ink onto a glass sheet to achieve the right consistency before applying it to the lino block. The inked block is pressed onto fabric with even pressure to transfer the design, repeating the process and aligning each print with precision.
This technique demands focus to ensure the pattern remains consistent and each piece may have slight variations in colour or alignment, adding to its unique, charm. Inga only prints the fabric needed, keeping waste to a minimum and saving offcuts for future projects. Once printed, the fabric is heat set for durability and sewn into sustainable products such as lampshades, cushions, and accessories.
