Lynsey Isles
Lynsey is a pastel artist working from her home studio in Blairgowrie, Perthshire. She draws her inspiration from the rich tapestry of the natural world which has captivated her since childhood. Growing up in a rural environment, surrounded by animals and immersed in nature, Lynsey finds solace and inspiration creating the beautiful colours, textures and characters of our abundant and varied wildlife & scenery.
Aesthetic
Lynsey’s art is inspired by quiet moments in nature and the emotional connection people have with the natural world. In each of her pastel creations Lynsey endeavours to craft an immersive experience with nature through her art, transporting viewers into the heart of the wild. Lynsey’s realistic style with strong attention to detail results in colourful work which captures their beauty, shape and form but also their emotional reactions and interactions.
Practice
Lynsey gently builds soft pastel onto the surface, allowing the artwork to slowly come to life through patience, observation, and touch. Unlike paint, pastel cannot simply be brushed over or heavily reworked without losing its softness and light, so every mark is carefully considered. Through this detailed layering process, she hopes each piece invites the viewer to pause, look closer, and feel a sense of calm, wonder, and connection.
Drawn to the challenge of creating detail and atmosphere with such a delicate medium, Lynsey’s work beautifully captures fine feathers, flowing fur, reflections on water, and the intensity of an animal’s gaze. Each element is developed gradually through countless subtle layers of pigment, creating a sense of realism while also conveying emotion, movement, and the feeling of being present in the wild. Working in soft pastel requires a careful balance of precision and softness. Hours are spent refining intricate details, blending and layering colour to build depth, texture, and light, while preserving the gentle, velvety quality that makes pastel such a distinctive medium.
