Morna Goldie
Morna is a sea and landscape artist working in oils and gouache. Her contemporary and minimalist style captures the shapes and patterns of the natural world, inspired largely by Kintyre and the West Coast of Scotland, home to her family for generations and a place she feels deeply connected to.
A graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone, with two Postgraduate qualifications, Morna spent years teaching art and design while continuing to sketch during regular visits to Kintyre. Now fully dedicated to her creative practice, Morna works from her garden studio in Kinross, under the name Morna Goldie Art, creating original works, along with giclée prints and cards.
Aesthetic
Morna’s work is defined by her distinctive use of both colour and form. Her muted palettes evoke a peaceful sense of calm and contemplation, carefully selected to reflect the subtle shifts in light and atmosphere that characterise the Scottish West Coast.
She approaches the landscape as a collection of natural patterns and shapes, breaking them down into their essential forms. These elements are then thoughtfully reassembled to express how they interact and overlap within the view she observes.
What may appear as simplicity on the surface is underpinned by a thoughtfully considered process, one that draws on her understanding of light, structure, and the delicate interplay of colour to create depth, mood, and a quiet intensity.
Practice
Morna regularly visits the West Coast of Scotland, always with a sketchbook and pencil to hand. She captures her view of the landscape through quick, linear sketches, which later serve as the foundation for her studio work. Photography also plays a role in her process, helping her record compositions, shifting light, and reflections.
In the studio, she begins developing each piece using gouache and pencil, exploring ideas of colour, atmosphere, and light. Her final works are created in oil paint, applied with a smooth, almost seamless technique. This deliberate approach shifts the focus away from the texture of the paint, allowing the viewer to engage more deeply, and enjoy the essence of the landscape as she sees it.
