Morven Stewart
Morven is a painter, sketcher and explorer, a mixed media artist whose work is firmly rooted in her direct experience, whether land or sea scape, her creative approach invites us into an atmospheric and immersive space which captures the sensation of being truly present within a landscape.
When not working in the great outdoors, Morven’s studio base is at the Perth Creative Exchange. As well as stunning original artworks, Morven’s work can be enjoyed as giclee prints and cards.
Aesthetic
Morven’s own spirit of adventure and resilience is reflected in her work and carefully balances both the power and vulnerability of nature. There’s a real sense of connection to place and the environment whilst enjoying a sensory and emotional response.
Her style is deeply expressive and weather-driven. Through energetic mark-making and layered textures, each piece captures the landscape’s energy, the restless wind, rhythmic waves, and fleeting shimmer of light. This fluid sense of movement transforms the work into both a visual and visceral encounter with the elements themselves, each brushstroke bringing the image alive.
Practice
Working mostly outside, Morven thoroughly immerses herself in the landscape. She adventures into the wilds of Scotland and the far North with her wee green tent and sketching kit. Working with what she can carry and equipped with lightweight, weather-resistant materials, her medium of choice is often weather driven, oils for dreich days, watercolours and inks for those rare, glorious days of sunshine.
Her sketchbooks overflow with on-site drawings, notes and stories that capture the immediacy of each encounter. Through a focus on movement, light, colour, and the sensory experience of being outdoors, Morven transforms these moments into expressive visual narratives. As much as possible, Morven endeavours to work sustainably across all elements of her practice, including mark making using natural foraged resources, sourcing materials with an awareness of sustainability and travelling on foot, by bike or public transport when possible.
Rooted in respectful exploration and environmental awareness, her process combines storytelling and personal experience, resulting in work that feels both intimate and expansive.
