Caitlin Hanna

Caitlin Hanna is a neurodivergent, queer artist based in Perth. From a young age, they turned to art as a way of navigating and expressing internal struggles during a prolonged period of mental illness. This early connection to creativity has continued to shape their practice, which takes a holistic and intuitive approach. Working across a wide range of mediums and styles, Caitlin selects materials and methods based on what best communicates the concept and emotional intent behind each piece.

Caitlin studied Fine Art at the University of Cumbria, graduating in 2021. Since then, they have developed a diverse professional practice, contributing to projects that range from research into the accessibility of university level creative courses to their ongoing work as a freelance creative practitioner with a local social enterprise. In this role, they support young people in accessing opportunities within the creative industries. At the heart of Caitlin’s work is a commitment to community, empowerment, and sharing the sense of freedom that creativity has offered them.

Aesthetic

As a contemporary artist, Caitlin embraces a fluid approach to medium, allowing the core message or emotional drive of each work to determine its form.

Their practice is deeply personal, often drawing on lived experience and emotional reflection. Themes of confession and vulnerability run throughout their work, which frequently incorporates text and language as integral elements. Visually, their style leans toward the abstract and unrefined, favouring immediacy and honesty over finesse.

Practice

Caitlin describes their practice as ‘vomit art’, something instinctive, urgent, and at times unavoidable. While it can feel like a necessary release, this raw process also creates space for connection: between artist and audience, and among viewers themselves. Their work spans drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, poetry, and emotive writing. There is rarely a fixed plan; a piece may begin with a phrase, a feeling, or simply an interaction with materials, evolving organically from there. The process is less about control and more about expression, an outlet for frustration, joy, love, grief, anger, and confusion. It is an experience to be felt and shared, rather than a formula to be followed.
