Cathy Wagstaff's first solo exhibition 'Changing Light' at Artisan& Gallery, Aberfeldy features works which she describes as "A collection of 14 paintings inspired by the glow low in the sky on my walks at dusk and during travels to Skye and the North West Highlands, all between October and March".
Whilst a regular exhibitor at Artisan& in previous years, she's thrilled to hold her first solo exhibition 'Changing Light' with them from 13 June to 21 July,
The sky is Cathy’s constant source of inspiration. Her atmospheric paintings are a contemporary interpretation of light, capturing a sense of scale and the vastness and beauty of the natural world. She manipulates paint to express show she feels, sometimes in a simplified, abstracted way, sometimes a more literal rendition of a place. Her aim is to convey with all her art, whether in a sketchbook or on canvas, her love of wide-open spaces and the uplifiting experience of being in the natural world.
Cathy sketches a lot when she’s out and about. However, she rarely works directly from a sketchbook. It’s more a process of memorising what catches her eye in the moment. Working with acrylic paint wet-on-wet, Cathy loves manipulating the paint so some areas of colour can be very soft, almost featherly, and others thicker but not quite impasto thick. Sometimes adding acrylic ink to emphasise a more fluid area, Cathy really enjoys the unpredictability it lends.
All the small paintings in this collection were painted 'alla prima', meaning from start to finish in one go. This method is ideal with wet-on-wet paint. Cathy enjoys the complete focus and in-the-moment energy of this way of working.
She hopes her atmospheric paintings will bring a sense of wonder and serenity into your home.
