Our Winter Exhibition at Birnam Arts runs until Sunday 8 February (Gallery open daily from 10.30am to 3.30pm) and some Artisans are hosting workshop events and demonstrations over the coming weeks, a chance to get creative yourself and to see how they work.
On Wednesday 21 January at 3.30pm, join mixed media embroidery artist Karl Macrae for a demo of his boundary pushing art practice. Drawing with a needle and embroidery thread rather than a pen, Karl demonstrates a fresh approach to storytelling, marked by striking contrasts in his choice of materials and use of rich textures and bold compositions. No need to book, just turn up at 15:30.
On Saturday 7 February, Sheila Roberts is hosting an 'Intro to Intaglio Printmaking Workshop' between 10.30-12.30. This is a chance to discover the art of intaglio printmaking with accessible, recycled materials. Sheila Roberts will guide you through each step of the process, from drawing and impressing your designs on Tetra Pak plates to inking, wiping, and roll printing with precision using a pasta maker. Full details, cost information and how to book your place are on this Birnam Arts website link.
Also on Saturday 7 February Neil Paterson will be demonstrating how he creatives his Stone Carving Designs, and Dave Hunt will be doing a Painting Demonstration.
Neil will be demonstrating how a humble block of stone can be transformed into a wide array of forms, both real and imagined. You will get to watch a stone carving at different stages in the process, learn about the appropriate tools and safey equipement and most importantly the types of stone that you can and cannot carve. No need to book, drop by Birnam Arts anytime between 11am - 3pm on Saturday 7 February.
Dave Hunt's painting demonstration will begin at 2pm, just come along no booking needed, Dave will create an emotive painting in oil using materials including plaster and cold wax to produce a textured artwork following the inspirations of the Japanese aesthetics of Wabi Sabi and Ma. His organic working style responds to the materials where landscape or figurative elements can be suggested in the abstract language of the final artwork.
