The Spell of Autumn 🍂

Perthshire Artisan and Fibre Artist Wendy Farquharson

We’re in the midst of a glorious Autumn here in Perthshire and with it comes ‘The Spell of Autumn’, a stunning new exhibition by Perthshire Artisan Wendy Farquharson, returning to The Rose House in Perth from 22–26 October.

Following the success of her debut solo show, this collection immerses visitors in Scotland’s autumnal magic, where storytelling, texture, and colour blend into captivating works of art.

We chatted to Wendy about her creative journey, her love of Autumn, and what’s next for her growing art practice, and can't wait to see her new collection.

What did you enjoy most about your first exhibition?

“The first exhibition was an incredible experience. I loved watching people’s reactions and facial expressions when they first saw my work, those moments were priceless. It made me realise that I had created something people genuinely connected with and enjoyed looking at. That feeling has stayed with me ever since.”

How does storytelling feature in your work?

“I’ve always enjoyed sharing a story and a sense of connection through each piece. Together with my husband, we created the idea of ‘Scottish Landscapes with a Hidden Past’.  He researched historical sites, some local, others from places we’d visited further afield, and we wove those past stories into the artwork.”

“We never imagined how powerful that would be. The response was overwhelming, both in terms of emotional impact and sales. It gave the exhibition a depth that people really responded to.”

Tell us about your upcoming exhibition

“The new exhibition runs from 22-26 October and is all about my deep love for Autumn, my absolute favourite time of year.”

“Autumn gives me goosebumps. I feel drawn into its wilderness, the wild Highlands, the crumbling ruins, the earthy scents of damp leaves and oak woodsmoke. It’s a season that stirs the senses.”

“Using an array of stunning merino wool colours I blend and layer fibres to capture the fiery oranges, rich browns, and golden tones of the season. I want viewers to feel enveloped by Autumn, as if they’ve stepped into a spell. Perhaps that’s why I’ve decided to call this exhibition ‘The Spell of Autumn’🍂.”

Will you be demonstrating your process during the exhibition?

“Absolutely! I think it’s essential to have a table laid out showing how the felting process begins. Visitors love seeing how each piece takes shape, it helps them connect with the craft on a deeper level. It’s also a lovely opportunity for conversation and interaction.”

What’s next for your creative practice?

“I’m currently in the process of building a new garden studio, which I hope will be finished by the end of this year.”

“My goal is to start hosting felting workshops in early 2026, catering to all levels from beginners to more experienced artists. Having a demonstration table at the exhibition will help me gauge interest and shape the classes I’ll be offering.”

What’s your favourite order from The Rose House cafĂ©?

“Audrey at The Rose House has been tremendously supportive of my art journey, my work will always hang on their walls. She also however makes the perfect cappuccino and I struggle when it comes to choosing a cake from her cabinet, but I can never resist the custard empire biscuits, a favourite of both mine and my mum’s.”
