Shades of White Stone

Laura Stock

Laura Stock is a landscape artist who paints outdoors from life in wild and beautiful places. Untamed, atmospheric, and dramatic landscapes are her inspiration, as well as scenes saturated in vivid colour or striking light. Her work centres on an encounter with a landscape, capturing a fleeting moment that will never be repeated, along with the exhilaration and emotion felt in that instant. Laura paints to sear that moment into her memory. These instances are especially precious when created while travelling with her children and loved ones.

Aesthetic

Laura’s work is defined by a vibrant and expressive use of colour, rich pigment, loose brush marks, and strong tonal contrasts that evoke light and space. Her aim is not to imitate nature, instead, her aim is to create a gateway between inner and outer worlds, transporting the viewer to evocative, ethereal landscapes with a dreamlike quality.

Painting is deeply personal, serving as a means to express emotion and inner experience, imprinting the unconscious onto each encountered landscape. Laura’s work also reflects a narrative of recovery from illness, conveyed through paintings that radiate colour, strength, and a piercing light born from experiencing darkness.

Practice

Laura paints directly from nature, working outdoors, and recently relocated to Scotland with her young family to follow this calling. Whilst appreciating the vibrancy and versatility of oil paint, watercolour remains her true passion. Laura is drawn to its experimental nature, the way water and pigment move, shift, and flow into unpredictable patterns and forms. Painting within the elements, she becomes fully absorbed in the moment, entering a meditative state. This free-flowing approach ensures each work is unique, echoing the singular, time-specific encounters of painting outdoors.

Her sketchbooks form a deeply personal visual diary spanning over twenty-five years, filled with significant moments from her life. As Laura’s work is rooted in memory, even when facing a landscape she often pauses, allowing intuition and unconscious instinct to guide the placement of colour and form rather than simply replicating what is seen. Laura embraces the transparency of watercolour, where light reflects from the white paper beneath thin layers of pigment to create an inner radiance and otherworldly glow that cannot be achieved through any other medium.
